- The American Society of Home Inspectors is a not-for-profit professional association for home inspectors with the goal of advocating high standards of practice and a strict code of ethics for the member community. ASHI is the most respected professional association for home inspectors in North America. Through ASHI’s continued efforts, ASHI's Standards of Practice—covering all of a home's major systems—are now part of many pieces of state legislation and are recognized by consumers as the authoritative standard for professional home inspection.
- Completed 40 hours of pre-class training and 80 hours of technical education and skills training in the classroom and in the field, and passed examination following the end of class.
- In order to pass, an inspector must find all the defects a panel of other inspectors has identified in an actual house, as well as pass an oral test explaining the deficiencies in the home. Most inspectors fail this examination.
- Six hours of continuing education per-year required to maintain license
